How do I load a barbell to a target weight?
Take your target total, subtract the bar weight, then split what is left evenly across both ends of the bar. This calculator does that and shows the plates for each side.
How much does a barbell weigh?
A standard Olympic barbell weighs 20 kilos or about 45 pounds. You can change the bar weight in the calculator if yours is different.
Why can a target not always be hit?
Plates come in fixed sizes, so some totals cannot be built exactly. When that happens the tool loads as close as it can and tells you how far short each side is.
